Proposals To Reform Driver Training And Testing In The UK

Every year around half a million young people in the UK pass their driving test.  Unfortunately, as things stand, insureres cannot rely on the driving licence as evidence of a new driver’s safety.  In fact, insurers treat every new young driver as a major risk.  Not surprising when you look at the accident statistics.

Figures show that newly qualified drivers are involved in a disproportionately high number of accidents during the first few months after passing their driving test with one in 5 new drivers having an accident within the first six months and many more new drivers reporting near misses.

Driving in Great Britain is actually really quite safe compared to most other countries in the world.  Great Britain has one of the safest road networks in the world and road casualties have fallen steadily since 1990.  This however does not mean we should be complacent about road safety.  Fatalities involving newly qualified drivers and their passengers, account for approximately 20 percent of all road deaths in the UK.

Ruth Kelly MP, Secretary Of State For Transport, has recently announced proposals to reform driver training and testing in the UK with a pilot scheme in Scotland - the Pre-Driver Education in Safer Road Use.

Our driving school, 2Pass.eu will be taking part in the new scheme.

This post will be updated in the near future when I will provide more information.
